Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

minor shoplifting

My 15 year old son got caught shoplifting at rite aid. He left the store with a $1.69 piece of candy and was brought back in. We were called to get him. Yes he is a dumb ass and has been grounded for now. In the meantime we have recieved a letter from Rite Aids legal team asking demanding $300.00 or they may take further legal action and come after us for legal fees. Does this sound legit or are we being scammed? What options do we have.

Re: minor shoplifting

"legit" or "scammed" is not the issue. The store can propose any charges they like. Understand though, that regardless of whether you pay them or not, they can still bring criminal charges. I suggest you hire an attorney to resolve this with an Agreement that prevents it from going to criminal charges.
