Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
I have a misdeamenor-grand theft charge, i was sentenced to 200 hours of community service and 1 year of unsupervised probation in the los angeles county. My question is, can i try to get my case dismissed/expunged? I am also, unemployed and cannot afford a lawyer, will getting a public defender be best?

You can file a petition to have the charge dismissed pursuant to Penal Code section 1203.4 once you have completed the terms of probation, and are no longer on probation for any other offenses. You may be eligible for the public defender. A good start is for you to read the information here: http://www.courts.ca.gov/1070.htm
You don't get cases 'dismissed' after conviction except through an expungement Petition. You can apply once you finish ALL terms of sentencing and at least one year of probation are completed, and if there are no new charges pending. The Public Defender will not be appointed for that. Either hire an attorney or learn to do it yourself. Go to the court's website and follow their self help guidelines, or go online to seek helpful hints.
