Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
misdemeanor petty theft
i was charged with misdemeanor petty theft. items totaled less than $100. i went to court and had a choice between 5 days caltrans , 5 days in jail, or a fine. my public defender said the fine would be well over $500. so i chose caltrans. when i got home i read the documents i was given (yellow sheet) and it showed all my choices, and it stated that the fine was $150 not anything over $500. i would much rather just pay the fine instead of the cal trans. is there anyway i could get out of the caltrans work even after it was already ordered? i have the funds to pay the fine immediately.
im due back in court decemeber 12 and i have not signed up or done any of the caltrans.
-thanks.

Re: misdemeanor petty theft
With what is called Penalty Assessments, the $150 fine would in fact amount to about $500 once everything has been said and done.
