"what can I do"?

Nothing except mourn.

Law enforcement can not be 'compelled' to investigate any particular crime or complaint or request, because they have no 'legal obligation' to respond to any particular case.. And, they generally can't be sued for that either. If you had any specific evidence of who did the crime, you could / should provide that to police, but your 'feeling' about someone you suspect is not evidence. Unfortunately many crimes go unsolved, especially when it involves gangs, randomness, etc. It sounds like that is what the police may have told you.

Your recourse is primarily to seek out an attorney you can hire an investigator to see if it might be practical or even possible to bring a civil lawsuit for damages against the culprit[s] if you can identify and find proof who did it.
