Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

My mom just got picked up by the cops for a crime she did so many years ago. My mom use to take care of the elderly. Am not sure the actual story but she took a check from the elder she took care of and forged his signature and had someone else cash it. Am not sure of the amount but I believe its $10,000. the elderly man has already past away, the family were the ones to press charges. it's a first offense. What may be the consequences? Will she be able to post bail? What actions should we take? She is in Glendale, California.

She faces potential prison time if convicted. Without knowing all the facts, evidence, issues, defenses, etc., there is no way of offering valid opinion about her chances or strategy. Any request for Bail reduction will be decided by the judge at her first arraignment or later. She probably can post bail per the schedule available at the jail, but any money spent on that bail would be much better used to hire an attorney who could then seek reduced bail or OR release. If serious about hiring counsel on this, feel free to contact me asap. If she can't afford to hire private counsel, she can apply for the Public Defender.

I concur with pretty much everything Terry Nelson says. I write to add that the strengths and weaknesses of the case will determine the outcome. But it's not possible to know what the strengths and weaknesses of the prosecution's case are until her lawyer sees the evidence against her. For that, a good lawyer is the most important decision to make at this time. The fact that the incident occurred many years ago may help with her defense. Most criminal lawyers give free consultations, and you should have one or two. If you'd like to discuss this further with me, feel free to call me at 310 393 0639. Good luck.
