when can a officer or detective tap someone phone? how long can they do it?

They can very easily get the location of your call phone and the numbers of all the people you call. They need a court order to actually tap the phone. Usually someone finds out their phone was tapped when they are pulled over for a 'broken taillight.'

Any time they get a court order, for as long as the order lasts. You won't know it exists, duh, it is secret. Also, if they claim it is a national security issue, the feds don't even need a court order now, thanks to good ol' Progressive, big government control promoting, Obama's rules.
