Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
I paid a bondsperson to help my son leave jail. He had never been in any kind of trouble before. Now he says that he wants to go to Europe rather than face jail although he has been told that he will probably just receive probation for 3 years.
My question: I was referred to the bail office by a mutual personal friend of the bondsperson and I. The transaction was handled by phone. I mailed a check to their office but never received papers to sign or anything in writing. If my son flees, am I libel? Thank you very much for your time and consideration.

Yes, you will likely be sued for the balance if your son defaults on the bail. You may or may not have 'defenses' to the suit because of the lack of paperwork, but expect to have to pay.
