Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
perjury
My sister perjured herself in a deposition for a civil case. The perjury was to cover up her husband's violent and abusive behavior towards her. She felt she could not tell the truth in that deposition because of fear of her husband. Can she change her deposition? She does not know what to do about this matter. HELP!

Re: perjury
She could/should contact the attorney that conducted the depo and tell him the truth. The reason for the lie may be understandable, but perjury has severe legal consequences. If she voluntarily corrects the situation immediately, there is less likelihood of problem than if it is discovered later. The bottom line is that it is always best to tell the truth, no matter the supposed rationalizations; ou entire legal system depends upon people telling the truth.
