Does a petty theft crime over
20 years ago show up on your
records?

Yes, it does. However, I assume that this was a misdemeanor. You could have your record expunged.

If convicted as an adult, of course; records are forever, that's why your mamma tried to tell you to follow society's rules and live an honest life. However, depending upon the conviction, it may be possible to get it 'expunged' and the charges dismissed retroactively, so you can say 'no' on most job applications. If you were a juvenile at the time, the records either are sealed, or can be. Feel free to contact me if interested in doing either.
