Get a lawyer to:
1. Beat the case.
2. If cannot to No. 1, negotiate a diversion for complete dismissal.
3. If cannot do No. 1 or 2, reduce the charges to an infraction.

Attorneys are best to negotiate. In other words, stick to your own profession. Hire an attorney well in advance of your court date.

Even a lawyer representing himself is incompetent to do so and has a fool for a client. Get representation to protect your professional license. Contact me directly.
Re: petty theft pc484
The best way is to hire an experienced criminal lawyer. Laypeople wouldn't even know what to negotiate over, let alone how to do it.

The best deal you can with the prosecutor, based upon whatever your defenses and evidence are. If you're serious and concerned about the risk of penalties and conviction, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me for the legal help you need.
