You don't need a lawyer, he does.
Re: possession of alchool in public
Arguably, conviction of any charge can have implications for future prospects and it is always better to hire an attorney than to go it alone. If your son is convicted, it will go on his record, and he may be able to expunge it at a later date. However, this just means that he doesn't have to disclose it on a job application. It may still appear in many background checks. I would recommend you hire an attorney for your son. For a reasonable fee, this may may be able to be reduced to a simple infraction depending on the circumstances of his case. If he qualifies, he can be appointed a public defender who will probably be overworked with much more serious cases than your son's and consequently have very little time for him.

Depends upon how much risk he's willing to accept of going to jail or other penalties or a 'record'. It is probably never a bad choice to have an attorney that knows the system, the rules, the procedures, represent him. Generally an attorney can obtain outcomes a pro per can't. Feel free to contact me if he gets serious about doing so, if the case is in SoCAL courts.
Re: possession of alchool in public
An attorney could beat the case or get a better deal in terms of the offense and sentence. If you care about these things - and you should - you should get a lawyer.
Drunken in public might not sound like a serious charge but I strongly believe one should always do everything possible in order to keep criminal record clean. The issue of criminal record comes up all too often in situations people wish they did not have to deal with.
Hope this helps,
