A pretrial hearing is one where your attorney and the DA can discuss the case, the status of any discovery, motions or issues as well as try to work out a plea deal.

A pre trial is a court appearance in which the judge, your lawyer and the prosecutor meet (usually in the judge's chambers) to discuss your case and how the case can possibly be resolved by a deal.
