The proper procedure when attempting to defend yourself in a criminal proceeding is to first hire a lawyer. If you miss this important step, then the previous post may come into play.

To be prepared for a trial you have to understand the rules of evidence, the elements of the crime that have to be proved by the district attorney, and the appropriate jury instructions. Questioning a witness is more an art than a science. Therefore you would need to learn how to examine and cross-examine witnesses. Even experienced attorneys do no represent themselves. The reason is that they are personally involved in their case. This interferes with their objectivity in evaluating and preparing their case. It is common for the person on trial to concentrate on issues that they percieve as important, but are not the major issue to be addressed in a trial.
