how do I get a public defendant for my son? My son has been in custody for over a week and he cannot afford to pay an attorney? He has not been assigned a court date or an attorney.

The judge will appoint the public defender to represent your son when he goes to court.
If he was arrested for a new criminal offense, he should have been brought to court within two business days of arrest.

Your son applies at the next court hearing. His attorney will determine if he has been improperly held too long without appearance in court, and should have the charges dismissed.
