Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
Hello. Thank you for your reading my question. I am a P.A. in California. I live and practice in L.A. I am wanting to be able to efficiently defend myself if need be. I'm a trauma specialist, and have surgical cases in some pretty scary areas. My question is, am I breaking county, state, or federal law if I carry my 7" buck 119 fixed blade knife in Los Angeles if it is fully exposed, and in a sheath on my waist?

Not that I am aware. I am not aware of any regulations regarding knives in public.
1. That wouldn't meaningfully protect you from the kind of predators you could face. An edged weapon is the least effective weapon to rely upon. You have to be within arms reach to use it. Many of the threats you could face would be from firearms with a much longer 'reach'.
2. Whether 'legal' or not, it would definitely draw unwanted police attention, and you could also expect to have to spend legal defense fees to find out the answer from a judge. Nobody said every police officer would be tolerant of your claim of 'legality'. If you have any clothing over it, it becomes a concealed weapon.
