Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
I have just recently found out that I have a warrant. It is for a charge of possession of a controlled substance. The charge is from July of 2007 and the warrant was issued in august of 2009. In September of 2007 I was arrested on another charge of possession of a controlled substance and was sentenced to 1 year in Los Angeles County Jail. I was released in April of 2008 (before the warrant was issued). Since I was released from jail, I complete a drug rehabilitation program and enrolled in college. I have enrolled in college and am in my 3rd year at Cal Poly Pomona. I am a 4.0 student and well on my to attaining a bachelor's degree in computer science. I am a changed man am worried about what I should do. I can't go back to jail, as it will ruin my college semester. What do I do?

If there is a warrant, to properly handle it, you must turn yourself into the issuing court, with or without an attorney, and try to negotiate a recall of the warrant[s] and determine and properly deal with the supposed charge[s] that caused the warrant. If it is a mistake in records, it will get cleared up. Turning yourself in voluntarily will result in a better outcome than being brought in cuffs to court after arrest on the warrant. On felony charges, the defendant must be personally present at every court hearing and appearance. On misdemeanors and infractions, your attorney can appear in court without the defendant being present. Unless you're competent to effectively represent yourself in court against a professional prosecutor trying to put you in jail, most people hire an attorney who can. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me.
I agree, turning yourself in voluntarily will generally get a better result, as will having an attorney handle it for you. That is a pretty old warrant. Hire an attorney if at all possible. Good luck!
