Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
A relative plead no contest to selling mushrooms, now he needs to pay court fees, the public defender & to be on probation for 3 years. He needs to pay around $5000.00 in all for this. He was given the choice of working or going to school as part of his probation. He was only able to get a minimum wage job. He wants to go to school to earn a degree. Is there anyway of getting out of some or all of these court fines?

Have him ask his attorney. That's what he is there for. Only he knows the case.
NO. He can get community labor or serve jail time in lieu of the fine. Sounds like the best answer.
I agree with Mr. Fleetwood. If he doesn't want to pay his fines, the judge can give him jail time. Some of the fines are mandatory, however, and cannot be worked off or eliminated with jail.
