How would one replace a public defender before attending a preliminary hearing scheduled on 10/22/09

You have an unqualified right to fire him and hire your own lawyer and substitute him in. Your new lawyer can set up a court date before the prelim to sub in or do it on that day. The former is preferred by judges. But if the other way, he'd better be ready to go on that day.

Hire an attorney who will then substitute in at the hearing, or before.
