Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

reporting a felony on job apps

I have a felony on my record for Receiving Stolen Property, which makes job hunting virtually impossible.

The conviction is now 7 years old....aside from having it reduced to a misdemeanor, etc., is there any limit of time after which I no longer have to report it on a job application?

Thank you for your time.

The main benefit of reducing the charge to misd. under PC 1203.4 (i.e. if you have expunged the conviction) is that you don't have to tell employers about it. Even if they find out through a search, you can present them with your expungment papers... You will have to tell Government agencies.

Convictions are forever. If you lie and deny it on a job application, the employer has grounds for immediate firing for fraud, and they can find your record upon search. You should try to have it reduced and expunged. Then you can say 'no' on applications. Feel free to contact me if interested in doing so.

Assuming no other record since that conviction, and that it already has bee reduced to a misdemeanor (PC 17b and 1203.3) you need to apply for a certificate of rehabilitation. You local public defender office should help you with this.

Who says you have to report it on job applications? Lying on your job application isn't a crime unless it's for a government job. If I were you I would lie like hell. Of course most big corporations will do a computer search, but many smaller employers won't, and it's always possible that the computer won't find it. Maybe you will get away with it, or by the time they find out they'll like your work.
