Shoplifting Expunge possible? 1st offense

A young female college student was recently convicted of shoplifting at a major dept. store. It was a small item worth approximately $35. Sentence was 20 days of Caltrans, 1 night spent in jail. Public Defender advised to plea guilty. Defendant told police she had intent to steal item. How soon can this be expunged? It's difficult for this student to find work.
