You should definately hire an attorney to help you. You will most likely be charged with Grand Theft PC 487(theft of items valued over $400).

Jail time can happen. It all depends on what they charge, and if you elect to plead guilty, what you plead guilty to.

If you would like to discuss this case further I would be happy to answer more questions. Best of luck!

Theft of over $400 is grand theft, a felony. You may not be just looking at "shoplifting" (petty theft) charges. Several things will factor into what may happen to you:

Which courthouse your case is in;

The level of sophistication of your theft;

Your cooperation (or lack thereof) during the investigation;

Whether the store might be willing to accept a civil compromise;

How well your attorney can negotiate on your behalf.

With no priors, you 'probably' don't face much, or any, additional jail time, but should not 'assume' anything. It is always wise to hire an attorney to minimize the damage your charges hold. Feel free to contact me if serious about getting counsel to obtain the best possible 'deal' or take it to trial if justified.

If you are represented by a good lawyer, you should get no jail time given your lack of prior record. Call a couple of attorneys and pick one.
