He will probably be arraigned on Friday. You will get no further notice from the court. At the arraignment he will plead not guilty, he will be served with a stay away order, further dates will be set, and he will decide whether or not to waive time (talk to the lawyer about that). If he had an attorney, the attorney will appear. If he is unable to afford an attorney, one will be appointed for him. It may be charged either as a misdemeanor or as a felony. In either case the charges are serious. He needs a good attorney experienced with domestic violence cases. the law is relatively complicated and there are serious consequences.

He got paperwork when he was released from jail, showing the court date. If he didn't pay attention to that, or lost it, then immediately contact the criminal court or DA office to determine when he is due in court.

If you mean that his FIRST court appearance is coming up, then it is an Arraignment where he will plead not guilty. He needs to promptly hire an attorney. If you don't know how to represent yourself effectively against an experienced prosecutor intending to convict, then hire an attorney who does, who will try to get a dismissal, charge reduction, diversion, programs, or other decent outcome through motions, plea bargain, or take it to trial if appropriate. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me. Ill be happy to help fight and get the best outcome possible, using whatever defenses and sympathies there may be.
