Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Son was bullied to an extent that he wanted to end his life. The School was informed, but no penalties were given to the bullies. Because he attemted to end his life on campus, would the police require a 51/50 hold in order to take a report?

If the school hasn't already contacted authorities like CPS and police at the time, they are failing in their legal reporting responsibilities. If authorities do get called and involved, then they will have to make a determination whether or not to take the child for psychiatric exam on 5150 hold.

Anyone who "attempted to end his life" absolutely needs immediate counseling and treatment. A parent should be worrying about getting treatment, not whether it is 5150 or not. The social stigma you may be trying to avoid would be far less than a suicide of a child. The parents also need counseling to deal with such serious problems.

Lawyers would not be involved in any of that, but parents might consult with an attorney to discuss what, if anything, could be done about the bullying and school's failure to intervene. It all depends upon the real facts.
