Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

I was a staff accountant at a company and just got a call from the local sheriffs regarding a police report filed by former employer. I have a strong feeling it is about inflating my own payroll which was encouraged by my old boss who is no longer at the company and was fired last year. I have never done anything stupid like this and feel like just talking to the Board of Directors of the company and beg them for forgiveness and just give them back the money that I owe them. What else can I do...Please help...thank you.

You should not speak to anyone, not law enforcement, or any 3rd person, about these facts, until you have spoken with an attorney. You should seek out the most qualified attorney in or near your area, and arrange a consultation. Many, such as my law office, give FREE consultations. If you are in or near any 1 of my 3 locations, give us a call, and we can go over all the facts, and we can give you the best advice for your situation. I wish you the best...David Wallin

What can you do? OR, what should you have done before saying or doing anything?? Hire an attorney, unless you know how to effectively represent yourself in court against a professional prosecutor intending to convict. No amount of free 'tips and hints' from here or anywhere else are going to effectively help you in your defense, other than the advice to exercise the 5th Amendment right to SHUT UP and do NOT talk to anyone except an attorney about the case. That includes on this or any other web site or public forum. Most police and prosecutors will happily tell you that 95% of people convict themselves by trying to be 'helpful and cooperative', either during initial contact, questioning, interview or interrogation. If serious about hiring counsel to help in this, and if this is in SoCal courts, feel free to contact me.
