Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Stolen Puppy

My son's friend got his puppy stolen 2 weeks ago. We contacted the police and were told that it is pretty much a loss. His parents do not want to pursue the matter because they don't speak English very well. The kid (14) is heart broken. All we have are a few pictures of the puppy, he did not get a chance to take him to a vet. The puppy was a gift. Can he turn the puppy over to me so I could pursue legal action? The dog is at a house accross the street from mine. the thief's brother told us that he knows the puppy was stolen. PLEASE help. This is really hard to see and hear him and not being able to do anything.Thank you.

Re: Stolen Puppy

The issue is probably not who owns the puppy, but rather proof that the dog across the street is the one that was stolen. If you can prove that the stolen is across the street the police should with some pressure from you take some action. If the boy across the street stole the dog from this boy it is possible that he will do the same to others in the neighborhood.

Re: Stolen Puppy

File criminal charges with the police. If the police won't file charges, go to small claims court.
