Legal Question in Criminal Law in California
I was stopped for light over license plate out. But, then I was ordered out and given a field sobriety test, I dont drink and said so. Ipassed easily and the cop got mad and saidI was trying to defeat the test. He then got my purse out and searched it and searched my car. I have no record. I was put in handcuffs and told they would forget the whole thing if I gave them the name and address of a drugdealer with guns. I dont know any. So, he comes back and said he found drugs andthey were towing my car. I was I block from my apt. I was booked and have a court date. I dont have money or credit or any way to get money. Im hearing from neighbors that I dont have any chance of not being convicted. But I didnt do anything wrong. Is it true that because I cant hire a lawyer, I'm going to prison? I should say, I didnt havedrugs, and my carshouldnt have been searched and I should not have been given a sobriety test. I was freaking out because of the cops. Im an army vet andi can tell ya, I cant belive that this is how the usa operates.

If you don't have any money for a private attorney, why don't you ask the court to appoint you a public defender? That is the court appointed defense attorney for defendants who cannot afford a private attorney. Most of the public defenders are really good.
Tell your neighbors to butt out and stop scaring you with outrageous lies about what will happen to you. They are spouting nonsense. If there is no evidence of a crime, you can't be convicted.
At your first court appearance promptly request you be appointed a Public Defender attorney, and follow his advice.
