can you be given a strike on a case five ears after you have been convicted of it?

You aren't 'given' a strike now. You 'got' a strike when convicted of the offense five years ago. A strike is used for enhancement anytime you are charged/convicted of a new crime. Sounds like that is happening now. If serious about hiring counsel to defend new charges, feel free to contact me to discuss your situation. It is sometimes possible for counsel to get the DA and court to disregard the strike and negotiate a better deal you could live with.
