Your friend will need to defend the criminal charges. Depending upon the actual charges brought, he may be facing registration as a sex offender if convicted, in addition to the jail and fines possible. Have him contact me if serious about fighting this.

This is potentially a serious charge and your friend needs an attorney. A privately retainer lawyer could start investigating and fighting the case even before the arraignment on the first court date. Otherwise, your friend should at least get a public defender.
