Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

Help wiht possible welfare fraud

My boss notified me that the Welfare office was inquiring about my income. That it did not match the information that I had on file.I had been not reporting my total income.I was receiving $200 to 300 in cash aid, and $160 in food stamps per month.I received this overpayment from 4-02 to 1-03.My case was terminated in 1-03 for not sending in my monthly report.I didn't use the benifits for anything illegal.I know that it is wrong and I want to know if there is a way aroud being criminally prosicuited.I would be willing to pay back what I took, community service, etc.I am afraid I will loose my current job beacuse of this.I need to find a attorney but have absoluteley no money to hire one.Is there any type of organization that will help me free of charge before I am officially cahrged? Is waitning until I am charged the only opition-to wait for a court appointed attorney?Do I risk loosing my daughter? Can my spouse be held responsible if I am the one who did this? Please I am lost and don't know what to do.I have never done anything like this before-have no record at all-not even a traffic ticket.I just needed money for food and bills.

you can ask for a Public Defender when charged, or you can ask for Legal Aid or other charity group to assist. Call your local Bar Association to inquire.

You should expect to and prepare to be arrested. Do not talk ot the police. Just give them your name address and then request an attonrey. No matter what they may say do not reply with more than your name address and a request for an attorney.
