Legal Question in Criminal Law in California

So I used to work at sears and I did an exchange outside the return period and the person used to work there so I knew him. I was arrested after they led me to believe I was trying to save my job so I told them I did the exchange and realized it hurt the company. I had my arraignment this morning and plead not guilty and my public defender said we may be able to get a better deal. Now I have a pretrial on the 25th of January and was wondering if I can request a pretrial diversion. I am worried most about having a petty theft charge on my record. And if I can I would rather just do community service since Im a student and the fees would cost too much.

You should do whatever you can to NOT plead to a petty theft. If you can get a diversion that results in a dismissal, you should do whatever you can to do that. A petty theft will follow you the REST of your LIFE. You may want to consider a private attorney, if a Public Defender can't obtain the result you need. I wish you well.........David Wallin
