Legal Question in DUI Law in California
Is it beneficial to have a lawyer represent you for a first time DUI? What questions do I ask the lawyers to determine which is the best? Is it based on cost? If I select a less expensive lawyer can I trust him/ her to do her very best?

In most cases, yes. The very first thing that must be done, is that withing 10 days of the arrest, a DMV hearing must be requested. If this isn't done, then your rights regarding your license are lost. With respect to the actual case, the attorney should analyze the report to see if there are any loopholes/significant omissions that will allow either a Motion to Suppress evidence, or that may allow for a reduction of the offense or penalty. Bottom line, is that nobody can guarantee whether the lawyer you choose will be the best for your case. You just need to do your homework.

You are always entitled to represent yourself in court. Whether you should is a different issue. The conventional wisdom is that an attorney will be able to do a better job and get a better outcome. Prosecutors dont like dealing with ProPers, unless you are simply pleading guilty, not defending the case. Questions are to inform you of his experience and for you to reach a comfort level with the attorney. Simply let common sense and your knowledge level dictate what you need to ask to become informed.
