Legal Question in DUI Law in California
What to expect as an outcome? DUI
got a DUI the other day ( I refused a breathalizer, I think I was ok but I got nervous and didn't think straight). I was wondering what kind of outcome I could expect representing myself compared to hiring a lawyer. Also what would the ballpark cost be.
Thanks!

It is not a 'sales pitch' to say you'll get a better outcome with counsel than without. Your refusal of test will result in automatic suspension of your license; it was not a good idea. You also now face potential jail, fines, programs, probation, etc. An experienced attorney can help you minimize the damage, or take it to trial if there are reasons to think you could win an acquittal. Most attorneys charge 'about' the same amount within a range, so that is not you primary concern. You get what you pay for. Feel free to contact me if serious about getting counsel.

Well, it sounds like you are going to have an automatic suspension for failure to provide a breath sample. My office charges a flat fee for DUI cases. If you would like to discuss your case feel free to call.

The last fellow I knew who represented himself had his jaw broken in the slammer.

Don't represent yourself. You will not be given any leeway as a result and the prosecutors will not take you seriously. If you refused a breathalyzer or any chemical test, the DMV will automatically suspend your license. You only have ten days from your arrest to set up a DMV hearing to contest the suspension so you should act fast. The DMV hearing is separate from your criminal trial. At the criminal trial and depending on your previous drunk driving history you may be incarcerated, be ordered to pay fines, be ordered to enroll in alcohol abuse courses, and be ordered to have an ignition interlock device installed on your vehicle.
