Legal Question in Elder Law in California

Adult Conservertorship

I live in Los Angeles County, Los Angeles, Ca. I was the foster parent of a diagnosed disabled child. He is now 26. He has tried living independently since high school, but that has not worked out in terms of caring for himself (daily life skills, and support). He lives off SSI, but does not eat properly, and is extremely addictive to computers and video games to the point he plays on these from 6pm to about 6am each day, sleeping all day, and eating maybe one meal a day if we get it. We have observed this for three months after inviting him to stay with us. He has lived by himself with support, but this is not working. How do I become his conservertor, and if granted does that give the authority to help him establish limits, and encourage him to seek employment that he could be successful with. Without limits, he continues to digress in loss of weight, and low self esteem. He will not spend his money on food or life needs; only computer activities and accessories.

Re: Adult Conservertorship

You can seek a Conservatorship over him, giving legal control, but that doesn't necessarily translate into effective control over his person. The conservator could impose counseling and medical help if required, with appropriate court orders, including committment in an extreme. Contact me if interested in pursuing.
