Legal Question in Family Law in California
Do I need an attorney?
What's the best way to go about filing for custody and visitation? I also filed a child support case with the D.A., but they tell me that it could be a year before I recieve anything because he works for the studios and is in the Union so they have a hard time tracking them down in fields like this. I am having financial difficulties already because I'm not working, only recieving unemployment (which is about to run out) so affording an attorney is going to be hard. Is there any hope for my son and I?

You probably do need an attorney. Some attorneys work with you when it comes to legal fees. Sometime I do, as well, so long as the client has sincere intention to eventually compensate me for my fees.
In such cases, however, the client has to pay filing fees.
Let me know if you have more questions.

See if the court in your area has a family law facilitator. Many courts have a small office in the courthouse where volunteer attorneys will help you with the paperwork. Call the court clerk.

Unless you are on welfare you do not want to use the district attorney because it will take a long time. You can pay for many attorney's with the one year's child support that you are losing by going through the DA. A private attorney can work much faster and get child support coming to you in as short as two months. (Maybe less) Good Luck, Pat McCrary
