If a couple had kids but we're not married does the girlfriend still have the right to collect alimony on top of child support

Generally she would not be entitled to alimony. However under certain circumstances she could be under the Marvin v. Marvin "palimony" theory. It has very high hurdles to qualify, but it does apply in some cases where genuinely they were for all intents and purposes married.
