Legal Question in Family Law in California

I am getting divorced and my wife and I have been representing ourselves. I just received notice that she now has an attorney and we have a hearing next week. I don't want to represent myself now that she has an attorney, so will I be able to ask for an extension at the hearing next week to give me time to find an attorney? If so, what is a resonable amount of time to ask for?

Whether you are likely to get an extension depends on what the hearing is about. In any case, you should submit a formal request for a continuance of the hearing, in writing, as soon as possible. Once you serve that on the new attorney they may be willing to stipulate to a continuance rather than show up in court only to have your continuance granted anyway. That will, however, depend on the attorney and again what the hearing is about. If you would like me to handle seeking a continuance while you decide if you want to hire me or some other attorney to represent you, I can do that as a limited scope representation for a very modest fee. If you would like to discuss that option, feel free to give me a call or send me an email.
