getting legally married without a state license, married by natural law and recorded this way. Any possible legal complications with this in the future?

Only that such a marriage would have absolutely zero legal validity of any kind. "Legally married" and "without a state license" are mutually exclusive. There is no "legally married" without a license because without a license the law does not recognize the marriage as having any validity.

Ceremonies performed like this in California are not recognized as marriages. If the ceremony was performed in some other location ( other country etc...) where it is it a recognized marriage, the marriage will be considered valid in California.
