Legal Question in Family Law in California

We live in California and are going to be taking care of our 9 year old grandson. His mother lives in Washington state. She will sign custody papers, but we do not know where to start or what would be the best form of custody temp or permanent. Also what would be the cost?

You need to have a court order appointing you as guardians. The basic procedure is you file a petition with the court to be appointed guardians, the court appoints an investigator to report about your fitness to be guardians, the child, the mother and father, the facts and circumstances. The cost is several thousand dollars in court costs, probate investigator and attorney's fees, and of course if the matter is contested by the father, then it becomes more costly.
