Legal Question in Family Law in California

My former significant moved to China 15 months ago. I've been caring for his dog for the past 15 months paying all medical, food, daycare costs. He now wants me to send him the dog in Asia. Do I have any legal right to dispute his request to get his dog back?

You wouldn't send a dog to China, would you? How would you feel if the dog were to be butchered and eaten??
