Legal Question in Medical Leave in California

How does the FLA apply for the care of grandparents?

My grandparents raised me for the first 6yrs of my life, so they consider me as their daughter. They are both now in their 70's, they both speak very limited english and are required to see their medical doctor every 3-4 weeks. They need someone to be able to come with them to translate for them. I took a job 2 years ago that promised I would be able to leave on Fridays at 3pm. I took the job because it was a good deal because it meant I could go with them to their doctor visits. However my employer said I can not leave at that time any longer. As far as their health I am their care taker, is there anything I can do so that I may continue to help them? Our office is a small office of 5 people and Friday afternoon is really slow so we use it for paper work time (I work at a dental office). Can you please help me? Thank You

FMLA is based upon emergency or major medical need, not recurring visits as described. You can try to resolve this by making a formal request for FMLA time off, but it is at best a grey area.
