Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

A girl from my boyfriend's past claims that she is pregnant by him. She said she's 3-1/2 months pregnant and she wants financial support now. She had originally asked for $5,000 to pay for her medical bills thusfar. She said she has proof of text messages, phone calls and emails that she had a carnal relationship with my boyfriend for a couple of months. Today she called and said she is suing me and my boyfriend in the civil court. My boyfriend and i are registered domestic partners, so I know it will affect me financially. Is it possible for this woman to collect anything before the baby is born? Is it not standard to wait until the baby is born and then take DNA tests to prove it is indeed my boyfriend's responsibility?

I'm not sure why you would be directly liable for what your boyfriend might or might not have done. At the time you receive the court papers, you'll know better what she is claiming. A family law attorney would know whether a future father is liable for medical bills for the woman carrying the fetus. I don't know. The burden of proof is on the woman that he will be the father. Certainly, a father would have to pay child support after birth.
