is there any way I can get money owed for a job when i had only a verbal agreement

Unless it was a job that requires a written contract, such as a home remodeling contract, yes. There are a number of legal theories that support recovery for oral contracts or even informal arrangements that might not be valid contracts but where one person has benefited from the work and materials provided by another with the understanding that it was not a gift.
