if I owe a large debt, can I be sued or put in prison for not paying off this debt?

You can be sued within the statute of limitations. There are no debtors' prisons except for child support. If some debt collector were to threaten you with criminal prosecution, this is illegal, and you would have the right to sue them.

You won't go to prison unless you owe the money because you committed fraud or some other crime. Even then it would only happen if the government decides to prosecute you and then proves your guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. But the person to whom you owe the money may very well be able to sue you for it, depending upon the facts.
