the police came out to my home looking for me. they informed my family that they had some property that belonged to me. What type of property would they have? are they trying to serve me papers?

It's the sheriff's civil division that serves papers, not the police. I like Mr. Stone's suggestion.

Police don't "serve papers". They come to arrest people for crimes. They are free to lie and mislead in order to find you. Get a lawyer and exercise your 5th Amendment right to SHUT UP, and DO NOT speak to police. If serious about doing getting counsel, feel free to contact me.
