Yup. An amended complaint must be complete in and of itself. An amendment TO a complaint does not, but those are very rare, and risky. I've never filed on except to convert a doe defendant to a named party. Otherwise if a complaint needed amending I have always filed an amended complaint. I have only once in nearly 25 years received an amendment to a complaint other than the doe amendments.
