Sold car to unscrupulous friend; loan still in original owner's name.
Last year my niece sold her car to a friend who has been making payments on it, but her name is still on the car loan and registration. The friend has not refinanced as promised. The release of liability form was not submitted to DMV when the friend took the car. My niece knows that she must submit the release of liability form and will do so. However, her friend won't refinance or return the car. She even brought the police with her to confront him, and they did nothing. They know him and wouldn't do anything to help. She wants her friend to refinance the car and remove her liability. What can she do since he won't cooperate?

She has to file a release with DMV regardless of anything else. Send her there to do so immediately. They have forms for her to use. That will help keep her from being sue when he crashes the car and injures someone. This kind of 'sales' are always foolish.
