Legal Question in Civil Litigation in California

SSuing a parent after I turn 18 for theft before I was 18
My custodial father was verbally and mentally abusive to me, and I moved in with my mother shortly before my 18th birthday. Since that time, he stole my car, personal belongings, etc. On my 18th birthday, I went to the bank to remove his name from my account which had been set up when I was a child for the purposes of my education. At that time, I discovered (not surprisingly) that there was over $7000.00 ''missing.'' The amount of an insurance settlement from a car accident I was in a little over a year ago - that vehicle, which was ''totalled,'' was given me by my grandparents on my mother's side. I guess my question is, do I sue my father for that money, does my grandfather sue him for that money, or do either one of us have a legal right to sue for that money? I need it for my education and I don't know what to do! Please help.

Either/or call the police and report the theft, and file a civil suit for 'conversion' which is a fancy way of theft.
