Legal Question in Immigration Law in California
Hi Dear All,
Please answer my question on Duel Citizenship. My wife got US citizenship and while she was Green Card holder she was Russia citizen and had Russian passport. Now she wants to visit Russia but Russian passport is about to be expired. Should she abondon her Russian passport and request Visa to enter Russia or she still can reniew Russian passport and use it to enter and travel in Russia?
Is it allowed by USA law to have duel citizenship?
Thanks in advance for your answer,
Jay

She can't apply for a Russian visa because she is still a Russian citizen.
USA allows dual citizenship.

A better question is does Russia allow someone to retain Russian citizenship if Russian citizen becomes US citizen. If Russia does, then your wife can keep both the passports. Some countries allow dual citizenship, others don't. If Russian allows dual citizenship, then she won't need the visa upon becoming US citizen. If Russia does not, then she will. To give you an example, India does not offer dual citizenship. When Indian citizens acquire US citizenship, they have to get visa from Indian consulate to go to India. Hope this answers your question.
The US doesn't authorize dual citizenship per se, but it doesn't condemn it either. Whether Russia has the same policy is a matter of Russian law which can be researched on a Russian government website or at a Russian consulate (if they will provide that information anonymously). A Russian immigration lawyer could answer this question, but not a US immigration lawyer.
