Do you have an attorney helping you with your VAWA self-petition?

If you are out of status/illegaly in the country, yes, you can be placed in removal proceedings.

However, VAWA Unit at the VCS usually doesn't refer denied cases to ICE for deportation.

Hopefully, you had an attorney work with you to apply for the VAWA self-petition. If it was denied, you may file a motion to reopen, if you believe it was incorrect. Otherwise, if you are out of status or illegally in the country, yes, you can be placed in removal proceedings. This office has experience working with various VAWA cases.
