Legal Question in Immigration Law in California

green card expired

Case Description: My green card expired in the year 2000, can I still renew my card? or apply for citizenship?

Facts that I think make my case particularly difficult: I have a son, not living with me and i owe child support back pay, will this be a problem for me when i renew my card or apply for citizenship?

Please help me, thank you very much.

Hi,

You should be able to renew the card, but take care of the child support issues before applying foir citizenship as it may come up as an issue.

Feel free to get in touch if you need help with the renewal immigration follow up and any child support issues, we have good family lawyers on staff as well.

As long as you have not abandoned your status, you can renew your card. The child support issues, however, should be resolved prior to your application for Naturalization.
